Michigan is home to the largest percentage of Arab American voters of any state. On Tuesday, Democratic voters there are heading to the polls for the primary — and the Listen to Michigan movement is encouraging them to vote “uncommitted” rather than for President Biden. The movement’s activists want Biden to call for a cease-fire and end military funding to Israel. The columnist Michelle Goldberg traveled to Dearborn, Mich., and in this audio essay meets with Layla Elabed, Listen to Michigan’s campaign manager, hoping to understand the activists’ aims and what Democrats need to do to win back their support. CNN —President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump won their respective parties’ primaries in Michigan on Tuesday. “We demand President Biden to take action now – bring a permanent ceasefire,” said Layla Elabed, the campaign manager for the group. The Michigan primary was moved up near the front of the Democratic presidential nominating calendar this year. Biden defeated Trump in Michigan by about 150,000 votes four years later. After Democrats, who control the state Legislature and the governor’s office, moved the Michigan primary to February 27 despite the Republican opposition, the RNC and Michigan GOP came up with the hybrid model.

“Joe Biden is losing about 20 percent of the Democratic vote today, and many say it’s a sign of his weakness in November. Phillips’ high point was in New Hampshire, where he drew nearly 20% of the Democratic primary vote. Republicans opposed an earlier Michigan primary, which violated Republican National Committee rules limiting which states can hold contests before March 1. After Democrats, who control the legislature and the governor’s office, moved the Michigan primary to February 27 despite the Republican opposition, the RNC and the Michigan GOP came up with the hybrid model. However, Kristina Karamo, the election conspiracy theorist who the state party voted to oust in January, has refused to relinquish control, arguing that she was unlawfully removed.

They drew inspiration from the state’s 2008 Democratic primary, when “uncommitted” came in second place to Hillary Clinton with more than 40% of the vote. “The President is working hard to earn every vote in Michigan,” a Biden campaign spokesperson said in a statement. In recent weeks, the Biden administration has stressed its efforts to get humanitarian aid into Gaza and sharpened its tone toward Israel. Feelings of betrayal and guiltFor many Arab and Muslim Americans in Michigan, the push to vote uncommitted and promote a ceasefire is deeply personal. As she closed her remarks, Seikaly criticized the Biden administration for vetoing the recent UN Security Council ceasefire resolution.

Beto O'Rourke is backing a push for Michigan Democrats to vote "uncommitted" in the February 27 primary. Former Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas is endorsing a push for voters in the upcoming Michigan Democratic presidential primary to select "uncommitted" if they're dissatisfied with President Joe Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas war. AdvertisementMichigan's Democratic presidential primary will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 27. We should have a cease-fire … there should be an end to this war and there should be a negotiated solution to Palestinian statehood," O'Rourke told the outlet. "For whatever legitimate concerns people have about President Biden's response to the war in Gaza, we do know for a fact that, under President Trump, it would be much worse."

Former U.S. President Donald Trump looks on at a campaign event in Waterford Township, Michigan, U.S., February 17, 2024. The Michigan contest is the final major race before the election calendar broadens dramatically on Super Tuesday, March 5. The results this Tuesday will be closely watched for any clues about where Michigan is trending before the November election. But primary voters in Michigan can pick "uncommitted," which could give some in his party the option of casting what is essentially a protest vote. Meanwhile, the Michigan Republican Party is trying to emerge from an internal struggle between competing pro-Trump factions.

Two days before the Michigan Democratic primary, speakers at a rally on Sunday in Dearborn, Mich., urged voters to withhold their support from President Biden over his policy on the war in Gaza — and said that only Mr. Biden and Democrats who support his Israel policies would be to blame if the protest vote helped former President Donald J. Trump win in November. “You all know Trump is an existential threat to our democracy,” said one of the speakers, Representative Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan, “and President Biden is risking another Trump term over his support for the most right-wing government, most extremist government in the history of Israel.”Ms. Tlaib is the only member of Michigan’s congressional delegation backing an effort encouraging Democrats to protest Mr. Biden’s stance on the war in Gaza by voting “uncommitted” in the state’s primary on Tuesday. That movement, led by a group called Listen to Michigan, has energized a primary that Mr. Biden is expected to win handily, but it has raised concerns that the president could be losing support he needs to win the swing state in the general election in November. It is unclear how much support the push to vote “uncommitted” has garnered, even as Listen to Michigan has held rallies and visited mosques across the state since it began its efforts this month.

Gretchen Whitmer was planning to speak in Dearborn, Mich., at a feel-good event celebrating a health clinic founded by Muslim leaders. First, she posted a statement that did not include the word “Israel,” infuriating some in the Jewish community. Then she said she was “unequivocally supportive of Israel,” which was seen as a betrayal by many Arab Americans. As word of her Dearborn visit spread on social media, some in that largely Arab American city, usually friendly political turf for Democrats, announced plans for a protest. “WHITMER NOT WELCOME IN DEARBORN,” read one poster circulated by activists, who accused her of supporting genocide.

As infuriated as she is by Joe Biden’s stalwart support for Israel, Layla Elabed has not ruled out voting for him in November. A progressive Palestinian American community organizer in Dearborn, Mich., a majority Arab American city near Detroit, she doesn’t want to see Donald Trump back in office. “Donald Trump has never been a friend to our community,” she told me as we sat in an airy, modern Yemeni coffee shop. “We’re looking at unprecedented times where we are watching a genocide unfold in front of our eyes,” said Elabed. That’s why Elabed is managing the Listen to Michigan campaign, which is organizing to get people to protest Biden’s handling of the war by voting “uncommitted” in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.

For months, anger within the Democratic Party over President Biden’s support for Israel in the war in Gaza has been building. Protesters have shouted through his campaign events, marched outside the White House and vilified him as “Genocide Joe” on social media. Now, Michigan’s primary election next week will put that discontent on the ballot for the first time, with Mr. Biden’s liberal detractors urging Democrats to vote “uncommitted” against him. Some of the president’s allies worry that a movement to register disapproval against him now could have lasting effects into the general election — especially if Mr. Biden does not alter his stance toward the conflict. There are warning signs for Mr. Biden that frustration over Gaza has metastasized beyond Dearborn and other Detroit suburbs, which are the heart of Michigan’s Arab diaspora, and onto the state’s college campuses, where students increasingly feel affinity with the Palestinian cause.

Ford Motor Co on Tuesday said it had cut prices on its Mustang Mach-E electric SUV by up to $8,100 after sales fell sharply in January. The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker said U.S. sales of the Mach-E fell by 51% in January to 1,295. Ford and other legacy automakers have slowed their EV push to instead focus on higher-margin hybrid and gas-powered models. Ford said in January it would reduce production of its F-150 Lightning pickup truck, cutting production at its Michigan Rouge Electric Vehicle Center to one shift starting April 1.

“Dearborn doesn’t sleep,” I recently told an out-of-state visitor to my hometown. It was a reference to the celebratory time of Ramadan, when our city breaks bread together for iftar at sunset and suhoor, before sunrise, each day. Dearborn does not sleep. Our entire city is haunted by the images, videos and stories streaming out of Gaza. Many of us lived it, and still bear the scars of life under occupation and apartheid.

A campaign to get Michigan Democrats to vote against incumbent President Joe Biden in the state's February 27 primary has just gained a new supporter, Rep. Rashida Tlaib. Now, she's joining a campaign led by her sister to turn that disappointment in the Biden administration into an "uncommitted" vote in the upcoming Michigan primary, Tlaib said in a video posted to the X account of the campaign Listen To Michigan on February 17. The campaign, Listen to Michigan, is an effort to earn Biden's backing for a cease-fire in Israel's war in Gaza by having Democrats vote "uncommitted" in the Michigan primary. Now, speaking from an early voting site in Michigan, she's telling her constituents to vote against the president directly. "If you want us to be louder then come here and vote uncommitted," Tlaib said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House on Friday sought to downplay sharp criticism levied against Israel by President Joe Biden and a senior national security official over how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has conducted Israel's four-month-old war aimed at rooting out Hamas militants from Gaza. The White House National Security Council confirmed that Finer’s comments, as reported by the Times, were accurate. Hamas, however, has demanded that Israel release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and end the war as part of a hostage deal. Biden said he still is hopeful that a deal can be worked out that might create a path to ending the war. Biden enjoyed a roughly 3-to-1 advantage in Dearborn and 5-1 advantage in Hamtramck, and he won Wayne County by more than 330,000 votes.

By Steve HollandWASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has briefed Israel on a new U.S. national security memorandum that reminds countries receiving U.S. weapons to stick to international law, the White House said on Friday. The Israeli assault was launched in response to a Hamas attack on Israel in which Israel says 1,200 people were killed. "Instead we are spelling publicly the existing standards by the international law including the law of armed conflict." One section of the memorandum reminds recipients of U.S. military aid to "respect their obligations under international law and reduce the risk of civilian harm." Even if states say they are acting in self-defense, international rules regarding armed conflict apply to all participants in a war.

Washington CNN —Some Arab American leaders signaled clear discontent with what they heard from Biden administration officials in Michigan Thursday after meetings meant to address a key constituency’s frustration with US policy around the Israel-Hamas war. Michigan, which Biden narrowly won in his 2020 matchup against then-President Donald Trump, will be a crucial battleground again this November. The Muslim American vote could be especially critical. At least 146,620 of the 200,000 Muslim American voters in Michigan cast a ballot in the 2020 election cycle, according to an analysis by Emgage, an organization aimed at boosting the Muslim American vote. Arab American leaders spurned a previous meeting that had been scheduled with Biden campaign officials, not with administration policymakers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is sending several senior aides to Michigan to meet with Arab American and Muslim leaders, according to three people familiar with the matter, as his administration's handling of the Israel-Hamas war frustrates members of a key constituency in a 2024 battleground state. The effort, called Listen to Michigan, is set to be formally announced on Tuesday. The campaign’s budget will be $250,000 and will include digital advertising, direct mail and phone and text banking to contact supporters, Ms. Elabed said. There is a history of Michigan Democrats using Uncommitted as a protest vote. In 2008, when Michigan defied Democratic National Committee rules by moving its primary up in the nominating calendar, Barack Obama’s campaign urged supporters to vote for Uncommitted against Hillary Clinton. In that contest, 40 percent of Democratic primary voters chose Uncommitted against Mrs. Clinton and three other candidates.
